Suction-irrigation cannulas can cause tissue trauma

Bowel perforation by traumatic suction-irrigator cannulas have been documented in the literature (1,2). Laparoscopic bowel injuries are associated with increased morbidity and mortality (3).

How does it happen?

Inappropriate use of force during laparoscopic surgery due to limitations in visual and haptic perceptions could induce trauma at the instrument-tissue interface (4). As suction-irrigation devices can be used for blunt dissection and tissue retraction, their tips should be non-traumatic to avoid mechanical injuries to tissues and organs.
